In our fourth meeting we discuss the integration of sustainable technologies into everyday practice including work and daily life. This meeting focuses less on the individual technologies that we can use to eliminate waste and more on how those technologies and technology-free personal actions are integrated together and into our behavior to accomplish our waste elimination goals.

Contents

Homework

Bring in an example of a sustainable practice to share. This can include the integration of a previously discussed technology into a real world situation, a practitioner or integrated example of sustainable design or an infrastructural idea being implement to reduce waste. Be prepared to present.

In Class

We will start the class by sharing examples of sustainable practice we have found. We will discuss each briefly and then look at a few in-depth case studies (see below) that Leslie and Ian will provide. We will have a short break and reconvene for an hour discussion with 2 or 3 guest speakers working to integrate sustainable practice and design in their daily lives and professional practices.

Notes

It can be hard to differentiate the technologies we've already looked at and the practices that integrate those technologies or are sustainable independent of the technology used. The difference is about the practical execution. So while solar power is a sustainable technology, a building with a unique way of integrating solar power cells into it's design is an example of a sustainable practice. Both of our site visits are also appropriate examples (but, will not be accepted as homework examples). We are looking at systems that are sustainable.
